At Casa Santa Marta this morning, Pope Francis celebrated Mass and gave a homily on the value of not gossiping (more details, summary video).

Today Pope Francis received a number of audiences, including:

Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino of Japan, and entourage
• International Union of Superior Generals (UISG) (full text, full text Vatican trnsln). Also during this audience Pope Francis told the group that he would establish a commission to study the possibility of having female deacons (more details, summary video). Here’s an excellent follow-up interview with Sister Carmen Sammut, president of the UISG regarding the decision. As well further discussions are happening in the Roman church regarding this issue; here’s a good interview with Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity regarding it, and a nice article discussing it over at NCR.

Also today, he made some appointments, sent a tweet:

Dear Religious: wake up the world! Be witnesses to a different way of thinking, acting and living! (link)

and posted to Instagram:

Only if our witness is joyful will we attract men and women to Christ. #Christ, #Joy, #catholic (link)

In Pope Francis related news:
