|Pope Francis with the head of Armenia’s Orthodox Church, Karenkin II, at an Armenian Rite Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, April 12, 2015.|
Today at St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis attended the Armenian Rite Mass for Divine Mercy Sunday and proclaimed the Armenian Saint Gregory of Narek a Doctor of the Church (full text) and gave a homily there (full text, full video, summary video). In his homily, Pope Francis called the slaughter of Armenians at the beginning of the 20th century a “genocide,” which shortly stirred the government of Turkey to recall their ambassador to the Holy See (summary video). Following the Mass, His Holiness Aram I of the Armenian Catholic Church gave an address (full text), as well as His Holiness Karekin II (full text).
And he made an appointment.
And that’s the Pope Francis news for the day!
