Sharing in Christ’s Priesthood

Today Pope Francis had Mass at St. Peter’s Square for the canonization of blesseds: Vincenzo Grossi (wikipedia page), Mother María de la Purísima de la Cruz (wikipedia page, summary video), and Louis Martin & Maria Azelia Guérin and he gave a homily on how everyone who is baptized has Christ’s priesthood (full text, full video, full video with commentary, summary video). His glory is not that born of ambition or the thirst for power; it is is the glory of one who loves men and women, who accepts them and shares in their weakness, who offers them the grace which heals and restores, and accompanies them with infinite tenderness amid their tribulations.

Each of us, through baptism, share in our own way in Christ’s priesthood: the lay faithful in the common priesthood, priests in the ministerial priesthood. Consequently, all of us can receive the charity which flows from his open heart, for ourselves but also for others, and become “channels” of his love and compassion, especially for those who are suffering, discouraged and alone.

The Gratuitousness of Salvation

This morning at Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis celebrated Mass and gave a homily on the gratuitousness of salvation (more details, summary video). In his homily, he said:

the doctors of the law... they shortened the horizons of God as if the love of God were small, small, small, small, to the measure of each one of us.

...we are worthy of the gratuity of salvation, because love is free.

The source is love; the horizon is love. If you have closed the door and have taken away the key of love, you are not worthy of the free salvation you have received.

I love Pope Francis!!!! Pope Francis clearly understands God’s plans.

Published today in Paris Match, a French news outlet, is an interview with Pope Francis (more and more details). I wasn’t able to find the full text of the interview; it appears that perhaps it was only published in the paper publication, but on the French news website, there are several links with more details (original article in English, original video 1, original video 2). The interview took place on October 9th at Casa Santa Marta, and Pope Francis spoke to the reporter by phone on August 6th. From other articles I’ve read, Pope Francis apparently speaks quite exceptionally good French, and one might notice something of this from the first video interview link too, that there is no translator present.

Of the Ordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family, today an array of auditors presented their reports to the synod (full text). The day concluded with a press conference (full video, summary video 1, summary video 2). Additionally, there is report that communion for the divorced and remarried is presently being hotly discussed. Accessorially today, here’s a really really good video interview of Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati on the discussion in the synod on how “we are living in a cultural moment that is rich and also challenging for all human realities,” and especially of family life today.

Then in the evening, Pope Francis visited thirty homeless men staying at the Dono di misericordia or Gift of Mercy shelter in Rome (summary video).

Today Pope Francis also made a bunch of appointments.

In Pope Francis related news:

More details have emerged regarding events of the Holy Year of Mercy (original article in Italian). And it was reported that today emeritus Pope Benedict XVI had an interview with the German newspaper Bild Zeitung.

A Robust Injection Of Family Spirit

Today at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis had a General Audience and address on the topic of the idea of family inspiring the best and wellest relations, for all humankind and especially within God’s family (full text, full video, summary video). As usual, there were some super good lines:

A careful look at the daily life of the men and women of today shows immediately the need there is everywhere for a robust injection of family spirit. In fact, the style of relations -- civil, economic, juridical, professional, of citizenship -- seems very rational, formal, organized but also very “dehydrated,” arid, anonymous. At times it becomes unbearable. Although it wishes to be inclusive in its ways, in reality it abandons an increasingly greater number of people to loneliness and rejection.

The Church is and must be the family of God.

Families know well the dignity of feeling themselves children and not slaves or strangers, or just a number of an identity card.

I love Pope Francis!!!!!! He understands that the wellest qualities of families should be the wellest qualities of humankind and of God’s family.
